MMA -Republic Lightweight Rankings (EFC Top 5)

Rankings always seem to be a hot topic when it comes to match making in MMA. Although there is no science to these rankings , we thought it would be fun to map out the divisions in the EFC to try and establish who is in the conversation and who is not.
Important to note, we base these rankings on people that are clearly active in the EFC , not on Hiatus or retired. Things considered would be win streaks, finish rates, opponents beat and so on.
Champion – Martin Van Staaden
- Dave Mazany (16-6)
- Alain Ilunga (11-5)
- Gavin Hughes (9-1)
- Chris Bright (6-1)
- Deon Brunning (4-1)
The lightweight belt will be contended at EFC72 between the rightful Champ and number one contender as Martin Van Staaden Takes on Dave Mazany. The lightweight division is littered with great talent both veteran and young gun and Alain Ilunga is no exception. Ilunga is on a 6 fight win streak after losing 4 in a row, one if which was a title fight against former team mate Demarte Pensa. With current team amte at the helm, an interesting scenario has developed but either way Ilunga could be a contender at any stage. Gaving Hughes recently suffered his first career in a title fight against Van Staaden. With that being the only blemish on his professional career he is definitely still in the mix. Perhaps one more stern test could put him right back in the conversation. Chris Bright is probably one of South Africa’s most experienced MMA practitioners and he too has only suffered one lose in the EFC, that loss was at the hands of the now Number one contender , Dave Mazany. At the foot of the Rankings is the highly regarded, gritty, Cape town based fighter Deon Brunning who was recently one win away from getting a title shot.
